The 2023 Club Championship

Described below is a Summary of the 2023 Club Championship (CC). Registration for the 2023 Backgammon Club Championship is now open. Registration is $40, the same entry fee as playing in the winter backgammon league. As there are only 4 months until December as this is being written, we will be playing this Club Championship on Steroids. Next year, we will be able to space events out over the 11 months leading up to the year-end CC Finals knockout tournament - hereinafter referred to as "Da Finals."

1. Time Frame: Throughout the remainder of 2023, players will earn Club Championship points by playing in tournaments or matches of 5+ points to reach the holy grail of automatic qualification into Da Finals at the end of the year, which will be held at Laurel Manor Rec Center on Saturday, December 9, 2023, starting at 8:30 am.

2. How to Qualify for 2023 Club Championship: Sixteen players will compete on Saturday, December 9 in Da Finals of the CC. Players with the 12 highest Club Championship point totals will have found the holy grail and will automatically qualify for Da Finals.

The remaining four spots will be determined by a “play-in” knockout tournament for all remaining players who have entered the Club Championship but did not qualify automatically through point accumulation. This “play-in” tournament will be held at Laurel Manor on Saturday, December 2, starting at 8:30 am. The Winner and Runner-up in the Championship flight as well as in the Consolation flight will advance into Da Finals, held the following Saturday. Hint: To avoid having to qualify for Da Finals by winning or placing second in the “Play-In” tournament, make sure your point total is one of the Top Twelve highest in the club.

3. How do you win Club Championship points? Club members can win points in two ways. Play in backgammon matches or play in backgammon tournaments. You can begin to collect points for Matches and Tournaments once you have paid your $40 Registration Fee. The conclusion of the 2023 Directors Cup marks the end of the Club Championship point accumulation period. Players may track their Club Championship points on the club web site. Club Championship point totals will be updated periodically.

4. Backgammon matches: Club members will earn points every time they play in at least a five-point match outside of a formal tournament. The winner of the match receives 2 points; the loser is awarded 1 point. There is no limit to the number of matches you may play. Obviously, the more matches you play, the more points you can win towards qualifying for Da Finals at 2023 year end. Matches can be played at any regular backgammon club meeting, or they may be played anywhere else, including online. Online play enables our snowbirds like Don Lark and Tom Wesselman to play matches during their time up North and amass points to be used for qualifying for Da Finals. Each match result shall be reported to Barry Robbins or Todd Dickson. The matches played will also be used to update the member’s Player Rating (PR).

5. Backgammon tournaments: For any backgammon tournament you enter (except for the Directors Cup), you will receive 2 points. If you win your stratified flight or a knockout tournament, you will receive 20 points. If you come in 2nd place, you will earn 10 points. Each tournament result will be reported to Barry Robbins or Todd Dickson by the Tournament Director. The matches played will be used to update the member’s Player Rating.

Every Monday, there will be a knockout tournament at Aviary Rec Center for the first 16 players to sign up. There are no Entry Fees nor are there any cash prizes for those who win this tournament. Any club member may participate in these tourneys. However, only those players who have paid their $40 Registration Fee will be accredited with Club Championship points. Those members registered for the Club Championship will receive 2 points just for entering the tournament. The winner of the tournament receives 20 points. The runner-up receives 10 points. Semi Finalists receive 5 points each. Each tournament result will be reported to Barry Robbins or Todd Dickson by the Tournament Director. The matches played in this tournament will be used to update all participant’s Player Rating. In other words, those members not playing in the Club Championship will still get their Player Rating updated based upon the match results within this tournament.

Every Wednesday, there will be a knockout tournament at Chula Vista Rec Center for the first 16 players to sign up. There are no Entry Fees nor are there any cash prizes for those who win this tournament. Any member may participate in these tourneys. However, only those players who have paid their $40 Registration Fee will be accredited with Club Championship points. Those members registered for the Club Championship will receive 2 points just for entering the tournament. The winner of the tournament receives 20 points. The runner-up receives 10 points. Semi-Finalists receive 5 points each. Each tournament result will be reported to Barry Robbins or Todd Dickson by the Tournament Director. The matches played in this tournament will be used to update all participants' Player Rating. In other words, those members not playing in the Club Championship will still get their Player Rating updated based upon the match results within this tournament.

These guys count the points. We're in trouble.

6. Directors Cup Points: Because of the size of the Field and the fact that the Directors Cup is a triple loss tournament, Club Championship points that will be awarded to players are double the number of points awarded at a regular club tournament. Directors Cup Flight winners will receive 40 points. Flight Runner-up players will receive 20 points. Every player that enters the Directors Cup will receive 4 points.

Make sure you sign up for the Directors Cup.

7. 2023 Club Championship (Da Finals) Format: When we reach Da Finals, we will use Player Ratings (PR’s) rather than Championship Club points accumulated to seed the final 16-person Field. The field will be seeded with Highest PR playing lowest PR and so on. First and second round matches will be 7 points. Semi-final matches will be 9 points. The Finals match will be 11 points. Time clocks will be used. As we are crowning a Club Champion, this tournament is “one and done." One loss and you are out. There is no Consolation bracket, or third place game planned. This tournament is designed to produce one winner – The Club Champion.

8. Cash Prizes Every member of the Club has an opportunity to win cash prizes even if they do not make it to Da Finals. There is, of course, prize money in Da Finals, but there is also something called the Player Rating Strata Guaranteed Cash Awards.  First, Da Finals cash prizes.

Club Champion: $300 plus Club Championship Trophy.
Runner-Up: $150
Semi-Finalist: $125 to each

Now for the Player Rating Strata Guaranteed Cash Awards.
Everyone will be assigned a stratum based on Player Rating: Under 1400, 1400 - 1550, 1551 - 1700. Players with a PR > 1700 are not eligible for this cash pool. There will be one winner in each stratum, that being the player in the stratm that advances further in Da Finals than anyone else in the stratum. If no one in the stratum makes it to Da Finals, the cash prize will go to the person in the stratum who has accumulated the most Championship Club points. Each stratum winner will receive $100. Please note that a player can only receive money from one prize pool - the greater of Da Finals winnings and Stratum winnings. You cannot receive both - no, negative, absolutely not.

One more caveat. These payouts assume 26 players participate in the Club Championship universe. The prize pools will be adjusted if more or less than 26 players participate.
